The tutorials should not be on a black background. Good for night viewing, but terrible to print out. Wastes printer ink. Also smaller font size on printout. Uses less paper.
I’m just learning how to use all the features of this app but so far I am really enjoying it. I have a telescope and want to learn astrophotography but the equipment can be prohibitively expensive. I decided to try this app based on several online recommendations. You do need to learn the tutorials to get decent results. I took a pretty decent photo of the Orion Nebula in less than ideal viewing conditions (bad light pollution and it was getting windy, making the view shaky). Props to the developer for providing excellent instructions on using this!
does not work correctly on iphone 16 Pro max :: ios18.2.1
No good don’t download
Can’t catch the bad guys in the act (at night) without this app. I’m well pleased with video and photos by it. Next bell/whistle/improvement why not make voice activated shutter?
Terrible results! Running a brand new iPhone 15 Pro with iOS 18.0.1. I load the desired parameters and the app usually runs its own undesirable parameters with undesirable results! So far the app is undesirable…
Not allowing me to complete setting up the app. Telling me to allow access to photos, which has been done on me SE phone.
I just upgraded my phone to the Iphone 16 Pro. The app does not work - it keeps shutting off the phone. A shame as the Aurora Borealis has been outstanding the last teo nights.
Works as advertised. I use it often.
I’m on iPhone 16 Pro and iOS 18 and this app has crashed my phone twice within the space of twenty minutes. Otherwise, it seems like a handy app.
I had heard decent reviews from a forum and I wanted to try for myself. This app lags like crazy and eventually freezes up on my 14 Pro Max. I guess it’s not for everyone.
Maybe I just can’t figure it out, but I have no enhancement/ NV capabilities with this app.
I purchased this app, read through the tutorial on how to use it best for the Auroras. My plain non-pro Apple phone 13 took better pictures with the regular camera settings set at: nighttime at 10 seconds. For free. Waste of $3 in my experience.
If you have an older iPhone, I still have the XR, don’t bother. I bought it to take pictures of the aurora. I see 0 difference in these pictures vs the one my phone takes. No difference in the night sky with star mode vs the one I would normally take. Disappointing waste of money.
I never tried until recently, but why isn’t there a way to trigger the camera via Bluetooth? None of the four camera apps do this either. My video apps allow it, but they only do video. Even this app doesn’t work when doing video instead. Seems silly it’s not there. All that happens is it increases the Ringer volume. Though I did find the setting to allow triggering via the volume buttons of earbuds. Only of the others allow that.
In Apps it said $2.99, but I was just charged $10.98. What's up?!
I had good experience with NightCap with my iPhone 13 Pro. However, when I recently upgraded to an iPhone 15 pro NightCap is no longer compatible - it can’t focus on the stars. Testing against four other low light/astrophotography camera apps, infinite focus on my iPhone 15 pro is at around 0.95 (it was actually lower on my iPhone 13 Pro). Unfortunately with NightCap I run the focus all the way out to 1.00 and it still hasn’t achieved focus on the stars. I know the AI in NightCap is supposed to “learn” the camera and self calibrate the focus settings. But, after working with the phone outside for a while to see if it could learn, it didn’t. I still can’t achieve focus. I even tried deleting and reinstalling the app to see if had, perhaps, ported over the calibration data from my old iPhone 13 Pro. Still can’t achieve focus. I emailed the NightCap developers several times - no reply. Hence the review. Unfortunate, since otherwise NightCap was a pretty capable app for this application.
I use this app in conjunction with my telescope for some basic astrophotography photography. It takes some getting used to, but once you get a feel for the controls you can take some really amazing photos, even on older models of the iPhone.
I set up the app on an iPhone 14 Pro Max during the last two major meteor showers in low ambient light on a tripod. The first two days have me 100 shots and not a single meteor. For the Geminids, I set up the same way but left it running for ten hours. I only ran two hours for the first two tries. I got zero pictures during the ten hour run. I’m very disappointed in this app but glad it is cheap just like it’s AI software.
This app usually works great but I’m bummed to find out the last update was a year ago so meaning it’s way behind in iOS updates and maybe not taking advantage of the iPhone 15’s cameras. And I tried to use it to capture pictures of the meteor shower last night but it never saved any of the photos (the app has always had full access to my photo album and camera)
The app only takes solid black images, and none of the controls do anything.
I was on stars mode and took over 100 photos but when I stopped it I couldn’t find them anywhere??? They were not in my photos library??? Big bug!!!
Meet all my night shooting needs with just an iPhone.
Doesn’t recognize other lenses nothing you can’t do with built in. Please give a refund.
Downloaded this app to capture the recent meteor shower. I gave the app access to my camera, microphone and library. Despite following the instructions on using the “meteor” setting, nothing saved. Luckily I had my phone set on a tripod so I could enjoy the meteor shower with my own two eyes. Heartbreaking to discover it didn’t catch anything.
the sole purpose i bought this app is to take photos of meteors. however either the auto mode or using some manual turning failed to take a single photo of meteor. even failed to take the most brightest ones. this app should at least provide an option to save all the photos it took so I have a chance to manual pick the photos with meteor before your weird ai algorithm automatically removes them.
Get Immediate results with creative photography with this all that you need expansion camera tool app. Highly recommended, great for real time photo exposure and light writing in dynamic settings. Soo Rad!
Haven’t used for all functionalities, but for low night mode or star mode, it can’t beat my iPhone 12 Pro. I guess all of those 3rd party Apps can’t catch up the genetic app in the new phones. Unless you are still using old phone, no need to buy the app.
I totally regret buying this app. never produced a better result than iPhone 13 native camera app. total waste of dollars!
Maybe because I’m using an iPhone 14 Pro, but I don’t see that this app produced anything “wow” The long exposure photos I took with the regular camera app came out much more vibrant and crisp and I could go handheld with a 3s shutter vs the 15 These came not grainy and not good enough quality i would print or post them.
Bought and Used this app the night of December 20, 2022, about 100 miles north of Anchorage. It helped me take great photos of the northern lights. I had an iPhone 12 and used a tripod and a stylus to activate the shutter (kept my hands from freezing) throughout the two hours session. I used the tutorial that is part of the app and set my camera up following instructions. I did try just the iPhone photo app and it was “okay,” but the pictures using the Night Cap app were a lot better. Good value IMO
But not much. During the busiest meteor shower of the year, the camera picked up not one picture in an hour while I was watching the meteor show. Haven’t tried any other features but no good for what I purchased it for. iPhone 14 pro max.
This app is great for nighttime and Astrophotos, stars, planets, moon, lightening, you name it. Easy automated control take a lot of guesswork out. Was really impressed with photo quality using XR phone.
Pretty good app. Still figuring out how to use it. I recommend it
Making time-lapse videos and star trails is awesome! However, it’s hard to get up before sunrise to turn it off before it ruins your entire exposure in the case of star trails. How hard can it be to add a timer to end the exposure?
Remote settings turned on and works sometimes but mostly not. Very glitchy! Don’t bother PIA!
Been using this app for years and I’ve tried so many in hopes of finding something similar or better and I always revert back to this one. Best I’ve tried for astrophotog by far!
Amazing app for stargazing
Thought this was a one time purchase and was charged. Sadly wasn’t impressed.
Word really well
Waste of time. Waste of money.
Does it’s job beautifully. You need to make a version for Android.
would be an ok app if free, but for a paid app, it is not worth it. it will not work with bluetooth shutter clickers - i tried several
It doesn’t work… there’s no way any of the pics are 4k 😂
This app is okay. I wouldn’t really recommend using it for taking pictures of the moon (unless you have a telescope handy). Even if you use their tutorial on how to take a picture of the moon, it’s still left grainy and undefined. The stars mode definitely helps taking pictures of the stars, but they are kind of just a glob in the sky. My BIGGEST issue is the constant lag and freezing. It seems that if you try to adjust the settings too much, the app doesn’t know what to do so it ultimately freezes, leaving you to close the app and start again. I’ve tried uninstalling the app, powering my phone off.. but the lag continues. It does get the job done to a certain extent, but you need lots of patience to work the app. It definitely isn’t worth $3 though. With all the downfalls this app has, it honestly should be free. The only reason i’m giving it a three star is because it does help me take pictures of the moon with my telescope. Otherwise, this is app is just messy and not worth it.
The camera will freeze up when you try to change any settings. Regular camera works much better.
Great app but it would be TERRIFIC if I could print an instruction manual
This app does a great job in giving you additional control over your iPhone camera and I have made some cool Astro shots with it. I just wish it had a few items refined. 1. Ability to have it open at night with preset settings. When you open the app, it freezes due to trying to find the correct exposure and do a live view. This slows you down trying to capture your first shot. 2. Better ability to hold settings during a session. You get the ISO, focus and shutter set and take pictures. You stop to take a look in the photo app at your results. Then when you go back over to the app, all your settings are gone. Huge waste of time and effort and seems like a no-brainer. 3. EXIF data. I am shooting in tiff and none of the EXIF data is saved. That’s digital photography 101 to include the EXIF. I stopped having to write down shooting data 20 years ago. If you work around these items, you can get some nice shots.
I love your app, love my nightcap, one awesome filter you could add would be a lightning filter, kind of recording on a loop and when it detectsThe flash the loop keeps five seconds before the flash till maybe 10 seconds or 15 seconds after some adjustable number so you can get the crack whether it’s one or two or 3 miles away and also to be able to open up a video that you took like if I let my Camera run for an hour I live in Florida I’ll let My camera run and take long videos of the great lightning storms what I really would love would be to open your app and have it open my existing video from my library and scrub it as if it was real video from your app rather live video from an app but it could be just a super sharp 4K HD facing a great lightning storm and have your app scrub it and find the strikes because scrolling through 30 or 60 frames per second when you let your camera run for an hour it’s almost impossible to find a strikes,You could make everybody in the world the best lightning photographers ever if you added a lightning filter that runs on a loop configurable to five seconds before and maybe 30 seconds after so you hear the crack and also be able to open up an existing video file and scrub an existing file for the same thing, I think that would be amazing because I do lots of lightning photography on my phones but it’s so hard to find the strikes and in the long videos that alive filter or a post to filter would be amazing.Hope you think about it, hope you do it, wow that was a great strike I’m watching a great storm right now I sure wish I had an app that could go through the video I making I just pluck out that strike wow what a crack that was that was 2 miles away, anyway hope you think about it and hope you do it would be really awesome
