NightCap Camera App Reviews

Dont buy for now.

Bought this for an Arizona trip where we would be able to see a meteor shower super clearly in the desert. Bought with the assumption that their apple watch app would work. It doesnt. Rendered the app useless because of the motion it takes to take a decent picture. Dont buy until resolved!

Amazing!

This past weekend I went fishing in the dark in Alaska. There were clear skies and it wasnt too cold. I looked up and saw the prettiest Northern Lights! This app helped me capture the phenomenon and I got to share with all my friends and family on FB and IG! I dont know how to work the app like a pro but I cant wait to figure it out like a pro! Thanks!

Awesome app!!

Taking night shots or recording video with low light is now possible. The support from Chris is excellent as well. I highly recommend this app. I have been using this primarily for recording teachings/lectures and found out that this works the best when compared to other video apps.

Impressive Results

I have used this App with an iPhone attached to a telescope and captured many objects in the night sky. Numerous star clusters and brighter nebulas have turned out surprisingly well and are easily recognizable. Astro photos are not as simple to take as a snapshot and some post processing is usually needed. NightCap Pro has the ability to average many exposures together, thereby reducing noise in the picture. When numerous pictures have been taken in this way, (NightCap Pro can automate multiple exposures) stacking them together can yield impressive results. NightCap Pro is a powerful program and is the best Ive found for this type of imaging on an iPhone. It is easy to use and has worked consistently. I have not tried all the modes and features that the program has to offer yet but so far so good. The developer is responsive and helpful.

Magnificent

I have a iPhone 6+ and the all works Great for me and has cool exposers and star trails havent had a problem yet!

Night Cap pros a winner

Great app. Its easy to use. I can finally take low light photos with my iPhone.

Crap cant access photos so app wont work

Downloaded this app and paid for it and it doesnt even work. Says to go to settings and click the app name and give it access to my pictures. Only it doesnt ask only for my camera. I would love to get my money back even if it was just $1 or whatever.

Best camera app!

I was looking for aN app to let me control ISO, WB,easily. I gave up as I was told that Apple wont allow this. So I never imagine I can control ISO, shutter speed, white balance and FOC, and so easily, even when I am shooting video! It works great on 6 and 6S. Will try on 5S and iPad. Highly recommend it!

Confusing and laggy

After playing around with this for hours, and using for several weeks, I dont see how this is any better than the free camera apps. Most of the settings seem to have little if any effect on the picture quality.

Tantalizing! Hard to get even decent constellation shots. Major GUI flaw...

Has the best reputation of the "long exposure" camera apps. Given what *some* people have been able to accomplish with it, and their strong recommendations, thats no doubt deserved. I got it to take constellation photos. The Night Cap Pro website has an entire page devoted to photographing stars, star trails, meteors, and satellites. There are many wonderful photos there, including a fantastic shot of Orion over a tree line. The directions are clear--quite easy, in fact. Turn on Long Exposure, along with Light Boost, tap the shutter button, wait 10-15 seconds, tap it again, and Voila! You end up with a A NOISY PIXELATED MESS! Ive tried it two different pre-dawn mornings on Orion, spending a great deal of time and taking gobs of photos--with all sorts of different settings--and have had dismal results. Yes, if one looks closely at *some* of the photos, one can just make out Sirius, Rigel, Betelgeuse, and Orions Belt in the midst of the noise, but just barely. They are swamped by the multicolored dots of the noise. For sure, even that is impressive out of an iPad; however, the photographs look nothing like that posted on the website. I have tried a bunch of post-processing, too, but to no avail. WYSINWYG = What You See (on the website) Is NOT What You Get! I highlight these failure as a caution to others. While the directions make it sound easy and the photograph of Orion (and others there) impressive, youre NOT going to get similar results right out of the box. Indeed, one wonders which devices the photos were taken with (iPad Mini? iPad Air 2? IPhone 6S+?) and what post-processing tricks were employed. Knowing that could help others take similarly high quality photos and avoid frustration. Is a very recent device and camera necessary? Leaving the webpage, as is, is misleading. There should at least be strong disclaimers there explaining that such results are hard to achieve, which devices are needed, that it takes practice, post-processing, etc. JUST USE YOUR OLD DIGICAM! In contrast, I can pick up my very old, way out of date, Kodak digicam, with only 3 megapixels, set it to an infinity focus, ISO 400, and a 16-second exposure, and be assured--every time--of getting rich, down to 8th magnitude, colorful star and constellation photos. No tricks, no post-processing, just aim and click. (Always use delay timer, so that the act of pressing the shutter button doesnt jar the photograph.) Youll get Orion over the tree line just as you saw it in the pre-dawn sky! I mention this, not to disparage Night Cap Pro, which is dealing with the inherent limitations of the i-device cameras, but as a recommendation to others who have an old digicam lying around and want to take constellation photos. INTERFACE ISSUES To the developers credit, the graphical user interface of the app is quite good. (The app is feature rich, too.). However, I found one glaring flaw in it. While you are able to reposition the controls, sliding them up and down a narrow band on the left or right side of the screen, you are unable to reposition them elsewhere on the display. The reason this matters is because if you have a case and fold the iPad mini, for example, backwards into a stand position looking up, the folded triangular cover blocks the shutter set of controls. That means you cant tap the shutter button! Now then, I used the remote microphone ear buds, where you have a remote button, but the GUI is still a problem because, with the iPad resting against the folded cover, there is no way of seeing the shutter button and determining whether it clicked or not; whether or not it is working (red) and still taking the photo! 2ND FLAW-- HELP NEEDS HELP There is a second GUI flaw. If you select Help, you are forced to step through every single item, when most times, youre interested in only one. Thats just a plain nuisance. CONCLUSION In any event, read the reviews, look elsewhere on the web for blogs about it, and, hey, even buy the app and support the developer. Its only a couple of bucks and, if anyone besides Apples people can really make this work, itll be this developer!

NightCap Pro is the App You Want to Buy!

NightCap Pro is fantastic... This is the app you want to buy! Please read on... I was skeptical after reading a few not so positive reviews about NightCap Pro here on iTunes. So unsure that I went ahead and I bought the Slow Shutter Cam app to use for taking photos during the 2015 Geminids meteor shower. I installed Slow Shutter Cam and I was not impressed at all. The Slow Shutter Cam app had glowing reviews... However it was terrible to use! I read the help files and still I couldnt get the app to make any real difference. The Slow Shutter Cam app was not right for me! Disillusioned, I decided to give NightCap Pro a try. Right after installing the app I found it to be very user friendly. I followed the onscreen guide and reviewed the help files as well as the wonderful website. The website contained lots of information about taking photos of stars, meteors, and much more. NightCap Pro worked flawlessly and I was able to take some wonderful photos and even video! I can tell you I wasted my time and money on the other app. I hope this helps you make your decision to buy NightCap Pro.

Go to night cam

Played with many low light camera apps but this has the best results and easiest to use for me ... Love the interface and results ... Great app and makes a huge difference in low light ... Thanks!

Great app

This app works great in shoting Video in low light indoors. Highly recommend it. This is The 1st app that i found that Does a great job.

GREAT

Try this app on Christmas Eve with iphone 6plus, because my picture and video were coming out to dark. Purchase this app and the result were amazing. Best app that I have used for taking pictures and videos in low light.

Best low light and astrophoto camers

Nightcap Pro can do amazing things with an iPhone camera in low light situations. Ive used it many times for astrophotography, both for prime focus shots on the telescope, and also just using the phone camera. Hoping for clear skies soon to try out the new meteor trail modde. BTW, this app excels at general low light shots as well - try it for evening cityscapes.

An Astronomer/Photographers Best Friend

Thank you for letting me photograph the stars with the device I carry with me everywhere.

Awesome!

I dont even know what to say just plain works for night sky and low light photography. Great in app help to aid in your pics does not disappoint. Im using a iPhone 5S and it works fantastic. Developer quick to respond to questions if you have any. Latest update is unbelievable. Search Twitter/Instagram to see for yourself!

Great for astrophotography

This app is about as good as youre going to get when it comes to astrophotography on a smartphone. The ability to manually control ISO and exposure settings allows you to take some very detailed lunar and planetary photos, as well as some pleasing shots of nebulas and other deep-sky objects. It also excels in general low light photography, reducing noise in a seemingly magical fashion.

Dont Hesitate!! GET THIS NOW!!

Ive been looking for a really good reliable camera app to take long exposures like I see in movies and video clips of ppl standing still in a crowd moving at the speed of light around them! This is what Ive been waiting for! Thank You

Great app

A really good app for iPhones and phones in general. Great if you want to get similar quality pictures of that of a regular camera. With customizable settings for ISO, aperture, etc. it is a great all around product. And app developer is really good in engaging with his audience, as he has helped me a lot and helped to get you noticed.
